Support Meetings

Support meetings are a safe space for you to meet and chat with other parents with shared experience. Our meetings are informal and discussions are facilitated by a trained Befriender.

Support meetings

We recognise that just like every parent’s grief is different and unique to them, so is everyone’s journey after their loss. In recognition of this, we provide a range of support meetings to accommodate the individual needs of you and your family to ensure that you have the opportunity to meet and chat with other families who are at a similar stage in their journey.

Group meetings give you the opportunity to meet other families who have been through something similar and who will be able to relate to many of those complex feelings. We understand that the loss of your baby is unique to other losses and you may struggle to find others who understand how you feel.

If you are planning to come to your first meeting, please email Cecilia, our Befriending Coordinator or call on 0131 622 6263 to chat about meeting a little earlier than the start time, if you think this would help.

In May 2007 our world was turned upside down when at 23 weeks into pregnancy we lost our little girl Ailsa. The first weeks passed in a blur and then a family friend who had sadly also lost her daughter a couple of years earlier encouraged me to go along to a SANDS meeting which she came with me to. I remember feeling really nervous and not knowing what to expect but i can honestly say that it was the most important Monday night of my life, in the lovely surroundings at Craiglockart where I met many other bereaved mums and dads at different stages of their grief but all with the common thing of being part of this club that none of us would ever wish to be in. If it were not for the support of Sands and the most amazing life long friends I have made through them I absolutely would not be where I am today. The meetings just give you that chance to be with others who truly understand. I have spent nights sitting in silence just listening, nights sharing my story and worries and nights even having a laugh which in the early days seems like something you will never do again! Luckily I went on to fall pregnant again and again Sands pregnancy support groups helped through this time. If you are thinking of getting in touch and going along to a meeting no matter what stage in your grief, how many years down the line you are I would strongly say do it – you have nothing to lose and a lifetime of friends and support to gain.
Thank you SANDS for being there.
